Elliott Smith committed suicide yesterday. He was 34. I didn’t know much about Elliott other than I knew he wasn’t happy. Every time I saw him in concert I could tell that not only did he not want to be there, but I was pretty sure he didn’t want to be anywhere.
With song titles like “Everything Means Nothing to Me” and “Bottle Up and Explode” and lyrics so sad they’d put Morrissey to shame, he was definitely one of my favourite songwriters. Whenever I was having a bad day I could always put in one of his CDs and know that at least I didn’t have it as bad as this guy.
i waited for a bus
to separate the both of us
and take me off far away from you
‘cos my feelings never change a bit
i always feel like shit
i don’t know why i guess that i “just do”
Anna says:
That he managed to make it as long as he did is more shocking than that he took his life. And still, completely crushing.

I always thought it would be a drug overdose. Then, we wouldn’t really know if it was intentional. But Elliott really meant it, I guess…
Zombie Claire says:
Why is he dead and John Mayer still alive ?
Robot Johnny says:
Even sadder is that thanks to the media coverage he’s currently known as “that guy who did the music for Good Will Hunting.”

How nickdrakian.
Zombie Claire says:
That’s his own fault though, he should have scored a new movie before he killed himself! I hear The Human Stain is going to be the depressing hit of the winter.
Matt says:
Ouch.
I’m not sure how I will watch the Royal Tenenbaums with “Needle in the Hay” underscoring one of the character’s suicide attempt by blade.

I had to ask my son if I liked Elliot Smith (it’s kindof a game we play). He said yeah, he did “Needle in the Hay”. So I had to tell him the news. He’s not too happy. And now that I really have him placed I’m bummed too.
Everything Means Nothing to Me was a good one too.
