Apple unveiled two new pieces of electronic crackrock today: new flat panel displays, and the next release of OS X: Tiger.

Now you may ask yourself, does anyone need a 30-inch widescreen computer display?  Well, nobody needs a 30-inch widescreen computer display…

Tiger has some features I’m looking forward to, even though they seem to be Apple’s answer to existing third-party software.

Spotlight will surely eliminate the need for Quicksilver or Launchbar.

But what’s more, Dashboard seems to be a complete rip-off of Konfabulator.  The people behind Konfab, have already posted their complaint right on their front page, and it’s no wonder.  While I’m not surprised they’re unhappy, in the end this is good for me, the user, because I’ve always thought that Konfabulator yields a lot of untapped potential, and having it as a native part of the operating system will hopefully inspire lots of cool widgets.

I’m also looking forward to the new version of Safari with built-in RSS support.  Hopefully this will be available to download long before Tiger is for sale.

I can’t wait to watch the keynote address once it’s online to watch Steve Jobs show it all off with his usual turtlenecked smugness.

Re: RSS Safari.

Grab a copy of FireFox (i’m sure you already have) and install the extension, Sage. An RSS client integrated into FireFox.

Of course, from what I heard on the IRC, Safari’s is a bit more intense. What with searching all of your feeds for updates/news items you acctually want. Ahem, Fark… boobies…

I need a 30 inch display...At least that’s what I’m trying to convince the soon-to-be-wife.

And your exactly right about Dashboard: I’ll take native support over Konfab’s somewhat sketchy widgets any day of the week.

SM, that 30” monitor will rekindle a lot of marriages as well.

The konfabulator people kind of had a weak business model to begin with. To me, that app was never worth the $25 US they wanted, and that was considering the added value they were depending on their community to contribute. For example, Unison is also $25, as is transmit, and they offer a hell of a lot more value than konfabulator.

Quicksilver guy is optimistic - he thinks the spotlight technology will make his app even better. And so is Brent of NNW fame.

I watched online that they have webconferencing for iChat where you can have 10 people audio, 3 people video - nice but it doesn’t work for PCs so what’s the point.

The point, I believe, is to show up the competition and invite people to switch to Macs.  As smart as it was to port the iPod to the PC, it doesn’t make much business sense to keep creating products for a rival company… which is too bad because iChat is pretty cool, but I know no one (mac users included) who use it because there are no Windows users…

Compatibility is always business sense. I’d love to use it but my company of course can’t use anything that’s not going to work with Windows. We have macs in the office but so few of our partner orgs do… So it will be MSN all the way until kingdom come.

The keynote was very awsome I love jobs.

There are people that do NEED (or would be very very usefull) a 30”. Being a video editor thoes 8.2 mill pixesl will come in handy. I can run final cut pro and have lots of room to work. This is very handy with the new h.164 codec it is much more easy to do HI-RES stuff. The price is up there but worth it for vidio editors working in HD.

also I was impressed with the core image and video. That “FUNHOUSE” program was a mini photoshop. the guy said they made it in a week I can’t waght to see what adobe does when they pick that up if they do at all.

I don’t know why I wach this shit it jsut gives me MAC envy I am a computer owner due to lack of funds but I do use MAC when I can get editing room time at school.

I’d encourage you to check out Daring Fireball’s article on the whole Dashboard vs Konfabulator conflagration.
